Round starters

I prefer to start the first round with either Prince Stennis or Priscilla. (Prince Stennis especially when playing against Scoia'tael because you get an extra card and reverse the turn order) Priscilla against Northern Realms and Skellige if possible. Monsters are a bit complicated. Depends on the situations.

Which card do you like to start your first round?

It all depends. I prefer my opponent to go first, as this gives you some idea as to how things may go. But I generally prefer to put down a standard, plain old nothing-special card just to get the ball rolling.

As for ending the game of Gwent i do immensely enjoy ruining the fun of Skellige opponents by using Merigold's hailstorm and reducing their melee and siege force next to nothing. Then i claim victory with Triss Merigold + Sile de Tansarville card combo, it is in most cases enough damage to get my own overall above my opponents.

If I'm to start playing the first card I mostly follow the hint from the tutorial and play a high value standard card. Normally the opponent will do more or less the same and it is likely that a nice and balanced and tactical game will result out of this.

I discovered that you can really mess up the monsters army by having both Merigold's hailstorm and Aeromancy cards in your hand on a single round. Total annihilation :D

I recently saw some crazy things one guy did with Roach - I did my usual first round with Ciri and some other minor stuff to pass quickly. That person bumped up Roach to 29 points and "Goldify" - that was CRAZY - I thought I would win easily as soon as my opponents card count went down to like 4 to my 7 + Ciri pickup...

Now I think the better strategy is try to win the first round - avoid garbage (if you have not so useful cards to start with - you probably don't have a good deck)

When I play Skellige I try to play cards that will benefit me in the second round, like setting up Craven Revived or using Queensguard and suchlike. Since Skellige gets progressively stronger from round to round, you can afford to lose the first round so long as you don't let NR get nutso in setting up unkillable AR'd god monsters.
