Inventory Icons Garbled/Missing with 2.21

+
Since installing version 2.21, my inventory icons are garbled, wrong, or missing. I have verified file integrity through Steam (passed). I uninstalled the game, removed the game directories and save game directories, and re-installed as a virgin install (no modes of course), and started a new game on that virgin install. Same issue. Here's what it looks like:

As you can see, some icons are wrong (boots in my gadget slot), some are missing, and some are garbled and look like bits of various icons mashed together. I reinstalled my graphics driver (Nvidia latest driver 572.16), and did a filesystem check to make sure it wasn't a Windows or hardware error. The game was running perfectly well until version 2.21. It just started and nothing I do can solve it, I've spent hours playing with game settings, reinstalling (three times!), loading lots of different saves...I've tried it all. I found some old posts mentioning this issue and tried the suggested fixes with no effect.

I have a ticket opened with CDPR (#61405...CDPR, if you're reading please look) which included the game save, screenshots, and a DXDiag report, but it's been three business days and there has been no response, even after prodding them for an update.

Hi, it's you on X I assume? :)
If you used mods, check if you "really" performed a clean install of the game. There are other folders you need to manually delete in order to wipe all mod data in the game files.
These two especially : REDEngine and CD Projekt Red folders from here %userprofile%\AppData\Local\

Yes I posted on X about this. Thanks for the info I will make sure it's *all* gone and try again. I'll let you know how it goes!

hello i also had borked icons, i wanna keep the mods but im not exactly sure which one is the one that i need to fix / reinstall for this to work again?

So following the complete uninstall procedure fixed the issue when I loaded a new game. Then I restored my saved games directory (about 80 saves), and it was screwy again in *every* save. Something definitely got hosed in the save game data at a deep, fundamental level. This was probably due to a mod.

I'll spend the evening with a virgin install reactivating my modes slowly and carefully...I'll let you know if/when I land on the culprit.

Thanks for the help!

You might have to use the linked procedure for a clean install first and lose all your save files. Not the worst, but a bit of a drag. There's probably a mod or combo of mods that eats the save data...once I find it I'll post.

The clean install procedure worked, thanks. I have figured out what the issue is...

It's not the game itself, and it's not a mod. It is the Vortex mod manager, it somehow broke with version 2.21 (at least on my system). So what happens is this: if *any* mod is loaded, even one, via Vortex, it breaks the icons as described in the OP. This behavior can be reverted by disabling all mods and using the "purge mods" function in Vortex. Alternatively the only way to correct the issue is to do the clean reinstall in this thread.

It is 100% a Vortex issue, as if I load these same mods manually without a mod manager they work fine and the game works as it's supposed to (with the mods working normally). But any mod, no matter what the mod does, if loaded through Vortex breaks the inventory icons. So unless Vortex corrects this problem with a patch or new version, this will continue.

What I don't know is the scope of this bug. I don't know if it will affect all users, or if it's related to my particular hardware or some feature I have enabled in Windows. I do know this was not broken in CP2077 version 2.2 using Vortex. I also know this is not Vortex version specific, as I tried this by using Vortex versions 1.13.7, 1.13.6, 1.13.5, and 1.12.6 (the last four release versions) and they all exhibit the same behavior. Something must have changed in game version 2.21 that Vortex is not correctly handling and is thus breaking or corrupting something.

UPDATE:

This was in fact a Vortex issue, but seems to have been a data corruption error and a clean removal/reinstall of Vortex solved it. I did multiple installs of different versions of Vortex during my troubleshooting, but that's apparently not enough. If this occurs you must remove Vortex, delete the app directory, and delete all the data under %user/Appdata/Roaming (mine was 43GB!!!). Once I did that and reinstalled Vortex all we well.

Also, do NOT use the latest Nvidia drivers with this game (version 572.12). Use the previous driver, version 566.36. The latest one has known issues that cause a lot of crashes with this game. I figure that out after doing a lot of online reading. The new driver gave me a crash on launch every single time, reverting fixed it.

Thanks for all who replied!
