Do the Gwent side quests have a major impact later on in the game?

Hi, title says it all. I think it's a great addition to the game and more than just a minigame but I honestly just am not up to learning all these mechanics behind it right now.

Two things I've found so far: First, some characters you can play against will no longer be available after certain events in the story, but you can still get their unique card by other means. Second, some quests outside of the Gwent-specific quests have you playing cards against people, but there is always an alternative solution.

That is correct and not at the same time, depending on the situation.

Correct for e.g.
Red Baron

Incorrect for e.g.
Vegelbund Estate party, High Stakes Tournament
