Thanks @ReptilePZ.

I wonder why Kickstarter again though. Is their studio so limited?

You'd think SRR was good enough to catch the attention of some publisher, but on the other hand this is probably better for the sake of creative freedom and fair (DRM free) distribution.

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see if they talk more about their reasoning behind this decision once the KS launches. I have a bunch of jumbled thoughts on this, but there really isn't enough information to speculate too much yet. What I will say is that I prefer this to them looking for a publisher.

Hatred is back on Steam. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=356532461

I did not expect this. I actually hope this turns out to be a good game. Obviously, a cathartic exercise in murder is not for everyone, but it'll be interesting to see people's reactions if a murder simulator has solid game mechanics and is fun to play. That's gonna scramble a few morality arguments. It looks real bare bones in the cut scenes though.

Turns out it's a small team making the game, like 9 or 10 guys. Anyone else interested in isometric shooters should check out the Alien Shooter series. Mindless fun.

I like the destructible environments in HATRED, it's what got me interested in it to begin with. I hope they make it mod friendly and people can do stuff with it. Yeah, it's a small team of Polish guys. I wonder if GoG will carry it too.

I do think such a game is kind of hilarious in this age of political correctness, but like you said the concept makes it somewhat niche.

Played Alien Shooter Vengeance (aka 2 I think) a while ago and it was really good (and visceral). Funny thing is nowadays a AAA version of those games would probably be advertised at least partly as an "RPG".

Still I don't think we should encourage young children to play this type of games, watch porn or smoke cigarettes, if anything for the fact that it might truncate their childhood.

Smoking has a harmful effect, that's factual, same with a kid watching porn, proven by studies.

When it comes to games the only thing studies have shown is an increase in aggression and that's due to their competitive nature.

EDIT: Hatred is back on Steam.

You can't toss all games in the same sack. Games are a medium like movies or books. You wouldn't want a child watching porn whether it's a magazine, movie or video game.

Like I said, it's not about playing video games period. It's the content they convey, which may not be suitable for all ages. Little kids laughing at plain homicide for no reason is just as disturbing as the porn scenario. How about a 9 year old giggling at pictures of rotting, mutilated bodies?

I just don't think 7 o 8 year olds should be playing this. Why would you have to emphasize on the grotesque at that age? Allow them to develop their intellect first, so they can cope with life later on. It's not about them becoming psychopaths, but about healthy cognitive development.

Like I said, I myself grew up with violent video games. But dismembering demons is a little different than slaughtering your neighbours. Context, motive and execution can make the difference between art and porn. In the end it's still violence, I know and I don't blame it for anything. However, the fact that our society sanctions sexuality more than violence is astounding.

Emphasize what exactly? I take issue with the notion that violent video game adversely affect kids, and there's no factual proof to suggest otherwise. Indeed there are many studies that back me on this, they didn't just research whether or not kids became psychos after all.

Video Game addiction, which is what a lot of parents really complain about. Is indeed an issue.

GTA and Postal as well. Remember when you butchered kids in Postal with napalm? That's a thing in that game.

Kids can understand violence quite well, what they can't really understand until they reach puberty is sex. I very much doubt having a kid see sex scenes in a regular movie would really impact him, but porn, well there's studies that do show that.

How much longer will I have to repeat myself?

I am not discussing violent video games. I am saying certain topics, regardless of medium, are more suitable for adults rather than children.

Yes, both GTA and Postal are not suitable for young children. The Witcher too. 7, 8 or 9 year olds are better off playing something else. For the third time, it's not about them becoming murderers. They could just be using their time in more constructive ways.

Why is porn harmful for children? Because it displays extreme physical interactions between adults engaged in emotional states to which humans unconsciously connect? Because it shows an unrealistic world in which you can get away with anything you want, sometimes including domination and abuse? Because it focuses entirely (without motive or context) on a raw physical sensation that kids neither understand nor can relate to? Oh wait, this sounds awfully close to extreme, context free violence.

Most projections in the human pre frontal cortex aren't fully developed until 30 years of age or so. This is one criteria for defining adulthood, which was I believe used by the Romans. If we are already physically handicapped for taking proper decisions for so long, why fill a child's head with unnecessary noise?

A couple of days/weeks ago a saw a vid of a game in development. It was a simulation where you were shipwrecked and stuck on a tropical island. I totally forgot the name and can't seem to find it on google. Someone that can help me? :)

What I'd retort to that is that age doesn't matter when it comes to it.

Honestly? I ultimately don't care that much about kids playing games or not that are violent. ( although mine will once they are capable of reading ). What I take issue is with people using the supposed issues of kids playing violent games or watching a sex scene to slam ratings on media that come from out of their ass. The ESRB system is completely dumb and same goes for the PG rating system. Actually PG rating is considerably worse.

Hahaha. So Gabe himself made them return it to greenlight I just learned. I wonder if Doug Lombardi and others got a talking to.

Umm yeah.... right. Because there is no link whatsoever between physical and emotional maturity and age. We are in full control of our development.

Yes, media ratings are worthless. That's why, as a society, we should be more concerned with how we spend our "free time". Younger generations seem to be improving their logical reasoning but going backwards in their self regulation and other cognitive abilities.

Anyway, we're going off topic now.

Hmmm, this seems like it might be worth a purchase. NEO Scavanger, a survival roguelike with RPG elements, popped up on gog (for Windows, Mac and Linux) a couple of days ago and appears to be getting fairly positive user reviews. Looks pretty cool, judging by the trailer:

Anyone played this? I'd love to hear some thoughts on it from people here before I buy (or not.)
