[ACT I] Damn Echinops in the cave

Hi,How are you suppose to get past the Echinops (spelling) in the cave in order to rescue the the merchant's friend? Those stupid plants keep coming back to life when you re-enter the cave after the resting! I can kill the first three before needing to rest. Thanks,Nightwalker

Do the crypt quest first and get the igni sign. Swallow, Blizzard, Tawny Owl and a grindstone/diamond dust. After you kill the first one just wait for your health to regenerate before triggering the second one. Repeat.

Ah ok! I'll try that.@ XhanWhat are you referring to?

He means get a torch and use that as a weapon against them. They really don't like being incinerated. Another thing that helps is having the dexterity attribute deflect arrows and poison resistance from stamina. It also helps in the beginning of Ch 2 if you talk to the old woman who wants money to tell you anything. Talk to her several times and ask for monster info. She'll eventually give you the echinops monster entry which you'll need in Ch 2.

Ah ok, thanks!

You don't have to exit the cave in order to regenerate. If you wish to save your Swallow potions, bring plenty of food and soft drinks. :) Bread, meat, fish and fruit regenerate your vitality rather fast on lower levels, and drinks like milk, water, apple juice, etc. will help regenerate your endurance for magic attacks. The good thing is that Echinopsae are immobile, so whenever your vitality approaches critical levels (i.e. the screen goes gray), run back to the part of the cave where you killed the Echinopsae (and no new Echinopsae can reach you), eat/drink and wait. Then pull out your torch and do it again. Rinse and repeat.

Yeah, I ended up using a swallow potion!

where do you get the crypt quest? The crypt has been locked every time I've tried to get in.

You have to finish Mikul's quest 'Burried memories' first then return and the locked crypt is open. You get one of the trophies, the ghoul Ozzrel there. Take a look here as well http://www.thewitcher.com/forum/index.php?topic=10456.0

ah, okay, thanks Petra. Now, I asked this in a different forum, but where's Mikul?-- ah, nevermind, that information is in the thread you referenced. Thanks!

If you entered the cave at the beginning of the 1. act. And you have no Igni-sign and poor knowledge. Try this ......Use a torch (is it the english word for "Fackel")? for the fight. Then you have the effect of the cremation (is it the english word for "Einäscherung"?)on your side and the echinopse are weakened. Take a rubedo-swallow-potion for the fight. That's enough for the echinopse.

heh, I don't even know where to get a torch. I've got the Igni sign, but it doesn't seem to do anything to the monsters -- I could never see the health bard on the Echinops anyway. No matter; I've finished that part things.

Use the strong style when you fight thoose evil plants. Use also something like whetstone for your sword. When you're low on health, run near the exit and drink swallow. It's best to start with the plants near the exit and then make your way deeper into the cave. You have to defeat every echinops to find out what is happened with Leuvaarden's friend.

Crap:Use the fast style or they'll hit ya!Also: move slowly into the Cave, learn where the monsters will spawn (3 at the door and 4 in the higher part)You don't necessarily have to fight all of them at the same time, one after another is also very niceAnd get yerself Self-healing, if yere a little low, just wait at the entrance and take a break (get something to eat or turn on TV)

There are an infinite amount of them to deal with if you want to keep entering the cave and exiting. I killed several dozen on medium difficulty using just using a torch and igni.

Crap? It's not crap. That's how i defeat them. I used the strong style and it worked. That's not crap. It's pretty crap that you say it's crap.In my opinion strong style works the best. With fast style you die soon. But i guess it's different for everyone.

who cares what style is used, so long as the monsters are dead? It's not like there are a thousand styles to choose from -- there's only three. What I'd like to know is this: Is there any call whatsoever for Geralt's other weapons, other than the steel and silver swords?

In my experience, the torch is useful for incinerating your opponents. The heavy weapons cause bleeding more efficiently, and the small weapons (daggers/small axes/hammers) cause pain more efficiently. I also discovered that if you have a dagger as your small weapon and you knockdown a HUMAN opponent, there are times where Geralt stakes his sword into the ground, pulls out the dagger, straddles the fallen enemy, and then proceeds to stab the crap out of him and then slit his throat twice. That was one hell of a surprise when he first did it, but man, now I make him do it as often as I can!

@Elveloz: yeah, that finishing move surprised the hell out of me, too, the first time I saw it! I laughed like a loon. One of the best finishing moves ever :)Now I have an axe, though, that I chose because it does more damage. Are there any axe finishing moves?
