Berengar/Dark Mode Question

Berengar/Dark Mode Question

Heya. Long time fan of first Witcher. But due to two back to back deployments, I just recently beat the first one.

Was wondering if someone would field two questions for me:

1) I just completed the game on Hard Mode. I was able to keep Berengar alive. Does his living or dieing have any bearing on the story in the Witcher 2?

2) I plan to play in Dark Mode, but can't seem to find an option to import my save game for it. Is this an option? While I enjoyed the Hard Mode of the first game, I found it just required grinding (which I didn't mind at all). But I did get sort of attached to the Raven Armor model (as well as the Rune Sword and Moon Blade models).

Thanks for any answer in advanced. And I would like to congratulate the creators on seriously one of the best franchises ever made. The Witcher will be to gaming what System Shock, Ultima, and Star Control are. Something that redefined what was possible, and changed the industry for the better.

Welcome to the forum! :)

Only two things are transferred to TW2: the side you take and Adda's status.

I killed berengar this time. Sort of on accident. Geralt disapproved of his whining and self pity. He told him to suck it up and then he got pissed and attacked me. :/
Well that's entirely his fault. First time I managed to keep him alive though. Sadly it has no influence at all on TW2 or even TW1.

I ended up siding with the Scoia'tal (sp?).

Though, I will likely do another play through and attempt to maintain a more neutral political stance while still fighting against the monsters in the people, and protecting the innocents from the monsters. (I also just finished reading Times of Contempt, and the neutral Geralt in the books appeals to me much more than picking a side in the games. I am really glad they made that an option in the first, though it is definitely the hardest to play in my opinion).

I guess from what you are saying, Berangar living or dieing in the first game is a non-factor in the second.

I can't find anything on importing a saved game for Dark Mode. Am I just missing it somewhere?

Berangar honestly.. just pisses me off.
It is the only thing I really want to nit-pick. A 'forced' Witcher doesn't really fit in the story of either the games or the books. I just don't think they would have wasted the effort on someone who didn't want to be a Witcher. He would have made a much better 'burn out' than what he was (which amounted to a sellout/cry baby in my opinion. But the way I see it, given the choices, Geralt would still have considered him a brother).

It's kind of like Special Forces. If you can't hang or don't want to be there, they don't waste any time with you.

I'm afraid that keeping Berengar alive is not meant to happen, if he dies you get a journal entry but if he doesn't there's no entry and if you try to talk to him he says that he needs time to think, he's not involved in TW2.

When you create a game you will be asked if you want to import your Witcher 1 savegame over for any difficulty you choose, also importing a save over gives you some better gear to start with (the ones you finished the first witcher with) and you will meet several npcs that will give you some gold or items for the actions you took in the past.

Personally I was a bit dissapointed at how little difference it made importing a save over and I hope it will be better for the third game, on the other hand I can understand that they want to make it a seperate story and I can see why it must not be something 'heavy'

I think it took a lot of work to even include this much continuity between the first and second games. And I am very appreciative. :)

Thank You for the answer to the import question. I was just missing it. (Like a newb :p)

I wouldn't start TW2 on dark mode right off. Dark mode was done more as a DLC to give the game a tiny bit more replay value. Honestly, all the new armors throw the balance off a bit. You'll find yourself crafting all the dark armors instead of going through the others as the devs had originally intended. The dark swords also have a darkening effect on the graphics. It's fine if you've already seen everything 10 times, but you might not want to do it on the first playthrough. I would suggest starting off on hard instead.

There's nothing different about importing a TW1 save game into Dark mode. There are two conditions that must be met to import a save game:

1. The save must be from the endgame: in the Ice Plains or the Order cloister. Saves from earlier will not import.

2. The save must be in either the TW1 or the TW2 saves folder. If you're importing a save on a computer that doesn't have TW1 installed (or you uninstalled), put the save in the TW2 saves folder.

When you choose "New Game" in TW2, and the save file meets these conditions, the game will offer to import it. This works at any difficulty level.

Thanks Guy. In my defense, compared to most games that allow you to import.. it was so stupidly easy I derped it.

And.. Yeah. I may just go on Hard Mode. Though. First things first. 30 waves of pwn in Arena. That may sound like an ass backward way to do it. But... I think it will be perfect training :p
It's funny how right the combat in Witcher 2 feels. I liked the combat system in the first. When the books talk about the gauntlet runs they did in training to become Witchers... this is sort of how I imagined they would fight. It is one of the most mobile and intuitive combat systems I have seen in a game.
