Looks like I just found out that skills with a golden border are passive which means you can use them without equipping them.

No, you need to place the skills in a slot to make them active. The golden border means it's active, i.e. already placed in a slot.

I mean the three alchemy skills and alternative aard. Its working even if its not in a slot.
