What is the cheap way to get into 3d modelling

I'm interesting in playing around with a bit of 3d modelling - is there any sort of free program out there for doing this. I'll be honest - everytime I find some sort of GNU or opensource project to do something I normally find it infinitely more usable than the pro versions (which are normally designed for some poor chinese dudes sat in sweatshops either doing 3d for Disney or drawing the Simpsons). Your help would be appreciated.

try thishttp://www.turbosquid.com/gmaxits a free version of max .. has not all the content though(Ajgor64 - thanks for the link)

Blender is a free open source 3d modeling application and has quite a large community that supports it. SoftImage XSI has their free "XSI Modtool" which is a fully functional top notch 3d application and has all the latest in "toys"Silo is a great fairly cheap ($110.00 Cdn) 3d modeling program that is very powerful and has many features, including a upcoming lip sync system.CheersVinnieMc
