Can You Change UV Mappings And Keep All Skinning Data?

Hey everyone, hope all is well!


I'm in the process of finalizing my retexture mod and ran into a question. Basically there are certain parts of the armor that I want to be metallic that aren't in the original, and I'm sort of brainstorming different ways to make this happen.
Currently, I'm wondering if I can just import the model into Blender, separate out its UVs into different maps, export it out, keep all skinning/weighting data, then modify the XML extensively.

I don't feel like messing with it tonight, but I wanted to pick your brains on this a bit, see what maybe can be done. I really (heavy emphasis) don't want to reskin the models, so if I can keep that intact during the process, I think everything could work out well, but I don't know at this point.
