Disable auto-tracking of current quest?

So I try to play without relying on quest markers as far as possible, which actually works quite well except that the journal doesn't track the directions that NPCs give you so you better remember them.
Problem is, you can't disable the markers entirely and when a quest goal updates it sets that quest as active and puts the markers on the map.
Is there a way to get rid of that?

I wish you could disable it, too, but for a different reason: if I'm not *doing* a quest it's just annoying, and quite often I've set a custom marker for an interesting looking spot and realised that at some point I've absent mindedly started following the quest marker instead.
