I said to him "Wow what is it like Vista but with no bugs?" ;D still I can't understand why another Windows when Vista is like only 2 years old. Yet, looking back at Microsoft's OS chronology each OS lasted no longer than 3 years until replace by a newer one (not including server OS just the ones that home users use), except XP which lasted for what...6 years? I'm thinking that we are in that stage where Micro will be releasing a couple more OS till that get an OS that last almost as long or longer like XP. :

Windows 7 is shaping up to be what they set out to do with Vista. There are loads of features they scrapped from Vista because they were already falling behind schedule. It's like what they did with Windows ME and 2000: they were supposed to be put together and be XP right from the start, but they fell behind schedule and ended up putting out the "home" version ME and the "professional" version 2000 first, then merged them together later to make XP. ME was crap, 2000 was brilliant but limited (initially) for those who wanted to play games etc. So following that pattern, Windows 7 will be brilliant but not immedeately accessible for the home user Initial impressions are generally really good though, so hopefully we can skip the 2nd step and go straight to XP-like goodness (without the initial XP bugs). Ah well. We'll see.

I have a sneaking suspicion Microsoft is going to be making moves to recapture the on-demand and streaming component audience it lost when it failed to capitalise on the Internet arena in future OS releases. And just recently, Microsoft filed for a patent on metered, pay-as-you-go computing, which also indicates to me a paradigm shift in the way they're thinking about OS design (regardless of whether this becomes practical reality or not).The thing that concerns me a bit with Microsoft is their propensity for getting into bed with dubious technologies in an attempt to curb piracy. They seem to continually miss the point about why it's a problem in the first place. It concerns me that they just don't get it - what fundamental functionality and freedoms might we be forced (through de facto standardisation and interconnection) to relinquish in the future due to their failure to understand the issues? To date, this has hardly been a deal-breaker, but they do have a somewhat dubious track record, so it's something that's in the back of my mind And along those lines, if the best indicator of future behaviour is past behaviour, then they'd need to be pulling some seriously impressive security measures out from behind their sphincters because most security measures supplied by Microsoft at the moment are laughable. At the end of the day, I just don't get excited over these things anymore. I'm the Internet equivalent of a cranky old man, brandishing his cane and yelling at the young whippersnappers to get off his lawn But I will be interested to observe the evolution of the OS, even if it's just the car crash mentality Just kidding. I think the whole industry is/will start moving away from general purpose computers for the home user. Content owners are wasting huge amounts of money and resources on trying to control the way their IP is accessed and more and more they are coming to the conclusion that it is a battle they cannot win. As lovely_psycho said, MS just filed for a patent on a pay-for-what-you-use scheme, games companies are more and more vocal about how piracy is hurting their base line on the pc as a platform and while open source software is nice in principle, just the number of different OSS licencing schemes shows how many problems and varying opinions of "open" there are. MS will move (slowly) towards Apple's modus operandi and both will close up more and more to where what you will end up buying is something with internet and some sort of productivity software and no real scope for modifications other than cosmetic or manufacturer upgrade/expansion. Ie. if you want to add photoshop, buy the appropriate hardware module a la nintendo cartridges of old for example, or log on to a software version of said module and do what you want to online on a pay-as-you go scheme like the one MS is proposing to patent (if that patent application doesn't fail miserably, we'll all be bowing to our Skynet Microsoft overlords for centuries to come).

To test it for real, you need to have a touch screen. The rest is something related between a combination of macos and vista, as allways...

I can think of very little that Microsoft could do that would hasten the adoption of Linux as much as instituting pay-as-you-go computing. Since having enough users for Linux that commercial software developers, such as game makers, would make sure their product would run on Linux in addition to Windows would be a good thing, I suppose the stupider Microsoft becomes, the better. There you go, Lovely -- some optimism to balance your cranky old man.

No, I don't think it's quite that simple. Linux is trying to become relevant, MS has a practical monopoly. Which means that while MS has no direct say in hardware manufacture, it has a very large and sometimes immediate influence on its direction. Witness the Vista capable/ -compatible fiasco with HP. I think if MS starts placing orders for smaller and smaller and eventually completely closed off form factors, that is the direction hardware manufacture and design will go. If/when that happens and quite possibly even before, software will go this way as well (game makers first!), quite probably generally more willingly than the hardware manufacturers, as it will give them more control over their product in every way including illegal copy prevention. Not all of them bad would be bad, mind, as it would make support much easier to provide and therefor cheaper and so in all a much easier and less frustrating experience for the customers. Imagine a world where if you can't get a piece of software to work, you might just be able to take out the offending cartridge (or whatever shape software modules would take) and replace it with a working one while the faulty one is being fixed by being plugged in to a computer designed for the purpose of just reprogramming them with original settings or newer versions, like flashing a bios.MS only has to count with two CPU manufacturers and while theoretically they can do what they like, neither wants to see the other be the sole provide for MS's markets. Especially since they include the largest of all, the one Linux/OSS has to crack if they want to have any sort of hope of becoming relevant at all: the business market. But remember what I said specifically about the change in the software environment: cheaper support only stands to benefit businesses. Not to mention that without a general purpose computer, there will be no playing around, Facebook or MSN in the bosses time, all of which would be achieved without the need for traffic filtering hardware or software and the additional load on support- and administrative personnel.It won't be tomorrow, or next year, or even the next five years. But I can see this happening over the course of the decennium following the next cpu cycle or two. And Linux/OSS adoption (with their egos and in-fighting on which licencing model is the most open, or the best suited to take OSS into battle with MS and come out victorious) on "old fashioned" all purpose computers will be the least of MS's worries. It might not be the ideal future or the future we instinctively would want as pc gamers (I've never in my life owned a gaming console), but if I had any say at Microsoft, that's where I would tell Ballmer to steer his company.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I'm trying the newly-released Windows 7 Beta 64-bit version. Once I got things updated I decided to install The Witcher from my original non-EE DVD. Patched it with the previous patches and then registered it. So far, so good.Installed the EE version along with the language pack. Still, so far, so good.Copied over my latest saved game from my Vista install. Started up with only one prompt to use Administrator privileges.Played....and played...and played...for over 2 hours without the first hiccup or sign of trouble. It plays awesome!Finished Chapter 2 and have now placed the 3 orbs on behalf of Triss and have to quit for now.So, if you're interested in trying the Windows 7 Beta release, it should work well with The Witcher. I'll be trying a few of my other favorites over the next few days.

I hope it doesn't become a reality. What did it say on the link about the game bundle? $1.25 per hour? Imagine you play an MMO game for 4 hours a day all month (30 day month for example). So that's $5 a day times the 30 days = $150 a month, plus your ISP and the monthly charge of your MMO, that's gonna come close to $210 a month :'( (did not include the browser bundle because I'm pretty sure the game bundle will come with internet but if not then that's another $96 for browser).This will hurt MS and the game industry. Because, the less I can use my PC, the less I can play my games. The less I can play my games, the less I'll be buying games. Shoot! I wouldn't buy their bundle bull in the first place. HEy Guys , I too have d/l the beta of windows 7 .. Now strangley when I nstalled from the dvd the Install seemed to go fine , but windows did complain something about the Tages driver was making the system run slow , so had been turned off ... I did not really get to play it much because I decided to run the Enhanced version patches ... Now my question is this .. As far as I can understand the Tages driver is about copy protection , and the only way to check if it is working is to see if the reverend is in the game? The other point I think is relevant is that as of 1.4 patch , i think Tages is turned off ? Is that right guys? So my question is rweally , should I work on fixing Tages under windows 7, first or should I spend a few hours playing the game to find out if it is really broken ? Does anybody know how to get hold of the game dev's to get them to test it out for us?

Tages was known to do some nasty stuff if a disk was misreported, but since patch 1.4 removes the need for a disk in the drive maybe it's ok...see if the Reverend or Mikul are there... if they're missing...you've got some problems

After close to 6 hours of gameplay under Windows 7 Beta, 64-bit, I finally got a game crash. This was quite a ways into Chapter III. I was entering Triss' house in the Trade Quarter and....got stuck.
