Age of braindance decadence: We didn’t get rid of our problems, we multiplied them

Unless..we're not too sure how memory is stored. One thought is this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DNA_methylation. A chemical process that stores our long-term memory.

Another argument is that by stimulating cells with certain current, we may be able to re-awaken them, as long as decay hasn't gone on too long.

How much you wanna bet we have this tech worked out loooong before full body conversions or casual Near Orbit Travel?

5 bucks...

Seeing as how the tech and knowhow for Near Orbit travel at least exists, its just not cheap enough to be viable yet.

Full body conversion... well yeah, you might have me on that one... though we already replace the heart quite casually, other organs might be more problematic, especially things like the kidney, pancreas (with spigot implance for easy juicing), liver....

So a braindance recorder isn't a brain implant, more like a camera?
And what if the victim is, for example, shot and died while recording? The record would still exist.
Seeing that senses and emotions are replicated in a braindance, then, if we braindance that moment, is it possible to die too? At least we should feel the pain, right?

Yes.

Commercial braindance - typically from an implant - is edited down to the producer's specifications. In the rare occasion an actor is killed, well, different companies deal with it differently. Actor's contracts are some protection against exploiting their death - also protection for the actor being "accidentally" killed in a risky stunt as their career nears its end.

And unedited, you would feel what the actor felt, depending on quality of gear.

More then that I'd think.
Your brain would be getting signals (or more to the point not getting) to shut down various body functions.
I'd bet your own body would react to the stimulus (or lack thereof) much the same way the victims' did.
Nasty.

It would definitely be a night mare.... the panic and pain just before death would be worse then the actual death I would think though...

Remember the end of the Crow....

I don't think it would record very much.. Is braindance recording described in the books? Would you be even conscious while recording? I mean, a device is messing with your brain, pulling out memories, to me it seems you would have to be sleeping at least.. Also, braindance records only certain memories, right? You pick the memory you want to record, not "you keep recording and wait until something exiting happens".. It is not a "always active" device.. Finding one that recorded someones murder would be next to impossible..

If Braindance is anything like simsense, and I think it is, the Braindance "star" should be conscious. What the end user wants is to feel all the sensorial information of somebody performing actions. If you are Braindancing say, someone doing an extreme sport you would feel the state of alert the athlete whose information was recorded at the time, how his/your muscles tense, how your feet take off or land on the ground... if it's someone with a better/more expensive lifestyle than yours you may be treated to the taste of the wine and dinner he's having... if you're Braindancing porn, well, it's like POV but you feel your hand spanking the butt or your butt being spanked.... among other things.

All that is recorded in your memory, you just usually can't recall it all that well.. (unless it is an extreme emotional case) People can remember every little detail (including everything you just described) under hypnosis, that means it is all still in your memory even though you can't recall it at all.. I like to believe braindance can record recent memories like something you did in a few days radius.. I mean, if all this didn't get recorded into your memory in the first place, braindance couldn't record it in the first place, as it records memories only.. (Like you would remember how much it hurt when you got shot and so on..)

"Braindance recording" records your memory and your memory contains it all.. (At least for a time)

Is braindance recording described in the books?
Yup, in the "Rockerboy" supplement, page 61 > 66
It works like in the movie "Strange Days" basicaly

I writted down some glimpse of it:

What Is The Braindance?

The Braindance is similar in nature to the Netrunner's interface, in that it allows, via neural transmission, a person to fully and realistically experience an alternate reality.
Unlike the interface a Netrunner uses, the perceptions are not created from the user's brain, but rather from the recorded thoughts, memories and physical sensations of another person.

Originaly developed as a method of aversion programming for convicted criminals, and later as a military simulator, the Braindance is fast becoming the most popular form of entertainment in today's media oriented society.

Braindance Organization, have many employees whose sole purpose is to go out and get involved in situations that normal people only dream of.
As they confront these dangers, a technician records the entire experience and will later edit them for the viewing audience. after all, who really wants to feel how the hero waited twenty minutes just to get transporation to the airport?

Once a suitable length chip has been compiled and edited, the chips are distributed to various locations for mass production.

These days, the public has three ways to gain access to the Braindance.

The first is at an arcade: a multi-level room consisting of private booths in which a person can experience the Braindance which are currently being offered by the distribution services. Of course, there are many bars which now have one or two Sony-Matsushita Black Boxes™, and subscribe to a distribution service. The third and most expensive way is to buy your own Black arcade or subscribe to a service yourself.

Braindance Recording Unit

Linked to the 'dancer's nervous system by a spinal plug, the recording unit converts nervous signals, subvocalized conversations, and physical sensations to psuedo-interface program data. Advanced units can link physical data with scripted information (text, graphics), to create special effects.
Price : 12,000 €b

History Of The Braindance:

[...]
Using an extrapolated Moss equation, the basis for neural response translation, and a Netrunner interface as a base Yuriko Sujimoto managed to record her thoughts, emotions and physical sensations into a standard information chip.
When she plugged the chip back into the modified cybermodem she was using as a recorder, Sujimoto was able to experience what she had recorded in exact detail.

All of which indicates the subject must be awake/aware and currently experiencing the situation being recorded.
Not to say there isn't a Black Project someplace to tap and record memories.

But this opens a HUGE can of worms.
Criminal Justice - Can the defendants memories be recorded and used as evidence?

Good question. I as just reading up on the Justice System in 2020 from Night City. Federal justice isn't, other than the UCJC. State and city law really varies. I'll see if I can quote the passage after we finish watching True Detective.

Like I said, braindance doesn't work like that... it doesn't treat your memory like a hard drive. It only records live input, and afterwards allows you to play it back. Or can generate new input from scratch, but it's either edited previous recordings, purely artificial constructions, or a mix of both. For a digital marvel, it's actually pretty analog.

Braindance, for all intents and purposes, is nothing more than a camcorder, that also records the users emotions and sensory state (smells, sounds, tastes, touch)....

But it has to record live, jsut like a camera you mount on the side of the road today isn't going to show you traffic from last week.

I don't know, i always imagined it would be possible to record past memories for some reason.. At least i was right about how one would not be able to record anything from a dead man.. Which is something..

There was also an interesting take on something similar to Brandance/Simstim in Ghost in the Shell (manga)... and here I am again talking about porn. It was called "edorno" (at least in spanish, don't know about other translations) and it was a way to share sensations with sex partners. The thing was that its use was only legal in homosexual relations since the users would receive sensorial information of the partner's genitals and erogenous zones and... well, since different sexes have different genitals and they are used in different ways, some of the things a female can experience might be annoying or even painful for a man who can't have that experience, or maybe the translation of these sensations would be twisted when applied into a different sex. So yes, two girls doing it can feel double the pleasure. Two men doing it can feel like they're doing it and being done at the same time.

And all that was just an ellaborate scheme by Shirow-sama to justify his putting a girl-on-girl-on-girl scene in his manga. To tell you the truth, I wish everyone went all the way like him with things like that. If you were caught by someone reading that and they question you, you can explain all this. It'll make perfect sense and you will be like "it's all in the interest of science".

I dunno... it was a neat idea, but it was jsut at the edge of taste, and shirow leaped off that edge afterwards straight into smut town. Man hasn't personally done anything worth reading or even looking at since GITS 1.5... Man Machine Interface was a horrible jumbled mess, and te rest of his career since has become nothing but hentai and video game concept art...

It's sad, he used to not only be my favorite mangaka, but oen of the most repected in the biz, and he just kinda went nuts... he is like the japanese version of John Byrne or Frank Miller.
