[GENERAL] Witcher swords - discussion & questions

+
You can't combine meteorites (steel swords) with runes (silver swords), so you need three meteorites (the irregular shaped objects).A word to combinations: What you choose is up to you and the style you prefer, but in general, swords forged from the same type of ore are in general stronger than mixed ups. Take a close look an the wiki article on steel swords to decide what type you want. As the forging is not cheap, you will want to save on money in early game, so you might have to wait for a little time in Act II to get the sword (it is possible to get the best (my opinion) meteorite sword in Act II: three red meteorites).

Just acquired this game about a week ago and am LOVING it. One thing I find curious is the seeming consensus that the forged steel sword with 3 red meteorites is so much better than the 3 yellow meteorites. I assume this is because everybody is so hung up on the 40% damage. A good number compared to the 24% on the yellow sword. But (if I comprehend the game mechanics correctly) you have FOUR 30% chances per hit of inflicting critical damage (two of which interrupt the targets attack) opposed to one 30% chance per hit with the red sword. For red, if you miss the dice roll for bleeding, roll on the next hit. But on yellow if you miss that dice roll, you have another for pain, then another for stun, then another for precise hit. And do the criticals stack? If they do then one hit gives you have a chance for 4 different types of critical damage. Red just gives you bleeding or...nothing. I haven't gotten 3 of any meteorites yet, just coming to the end of Act II, but I think I like the stats on the yellow sword. Can anyone confirm whether critical effects do or do not stack?

On a statistical note, you're right, Skullcowboy, but there is a big but: The critical hits are a certain chance to have a critical hit (which you will also get with talents/abilities), meaning that while you fight a strong oponent, you might cause a critical hit which will result in a continuos damage, or you might not. With the "three red", there is also the chance, but you will get the 40% extra damage on every hit. This means, you will do the same damge with 5 hits as you would do with 6 hits with the standard sword. For example, if you want to specialise in signs and not in sword skills, this extra damage might be responsible for your survival because you can bring the opponent down faster. If you want more continuos damage, I would go for a blast of igni, because, if you spent your talents right, it will allways do that damage, where the sword might do. If you ignore the signs, a combination of different ores or the "three yellow" might be better. From my experience with "three red" and Harvall, "three red" makes these battles easier. I tried "hunting and diplomacy" with Harvall and died several times, when I did it with "three red", I got through - barely (okay, my biggest problem might have been that I always was also attacked by kikimore warriors instead of only salamandra). It is a thing of personal favour, and for me it is "three red".Stacking of critical effects? If you mean if it is possible that an opponent can suffer from several different critical hits, definitly yes. I had fight in which monsters had effects from pain, bleeding and inceneration (from igni) at the same time. If you mean several effects from - i.e. "three yellow" at the same time (meaning the same hit), I don't know, but I guess not. It would make it to powerfull, if you compare the effects of the harder to get unique swords you can have at the end of the game.

Thanks for the response! As for stacking, what I meant was: in a single hit is there a chance that the target will suffer all of the possible critical effects. None of the literature I could find state that the effect from criticals is 'either this or that'. Like the yellow sword: Can 1 single blow cause damage +24% AND pain AND stun AND bleeding AND precise hit? If not, this raises all kinds of other questions (that probably won't get answered here ;) but, my mind just works that way) like what order are the criticals rolled in, yada yada yada. Guess I'll just have to round up the required meteorite pieces and go a hunting. Thanks again.

Timing is a big part of the allure of the triple red meteorite sword. You can obtain it in Act 1. Triple yellow meteorite sword you can get in something like Act 4 or 5? There will be better swords available by then.

hi.in act 2 i have this sun rune that says it's a weapon upgrade and can be branded into silver swords.how do i use it or brand it into a sword?is it a permanent upgrade?thanks

Yes, runes can be 'branded' into silver swords, and they provide permanent bonus. The balcksmith can do that. Best if you wait until you have 3 runes and then go to the blacksmith, though.

I am in the middle of Chapter III. I have two earth and one sun runes. Is that a good combo for my 'plain' witcher silver sword, or should I wait for some other better combo? Thanks.

a combo of earth and moon runes is better IMO.

Done!!Two Earth+ one Sun rune = awesome :)+30% Damage (like Harvall) and a whole row of nifty-nasty properties.Went straight into the swamps, and wasted the complete nest od royal Wyverns without needing any potion (cheat: I used a 20% grindstone though). Now that is something.Next to-do list: Stomp those Kikimores wandering about :D Just for fun, of course ;)

Congratulations, now we may call you king of the swamp and everyone has to obey your sword with or without grindstone 8)

Why, thank you! :DMy problem is that I really enjoy grinding in The Witcher. You know: 100% action with my brain on standby. Should I seek professional help? :teeth:

How do I get the rune thingies engraved or branded on to my swords?I tried going to the dwarf's forge in Vizima but there is no such option.Thnks.

You need to have at least three runes, three runes can be used at once, no more, no less, with different combinations. You will need also a gemstone (like a ruby for example). Then go to the blacksmith and tell him you need your sword to be reforged. Click on the hammer icon, and you will see his inventory with your future sword/swords in it. Pay him, and take your sword. Silver, of course. For steel ones there are meteorites.

Usually there are 2 persons in the blacksmith's shop, one is a merchant and one is the forger who has this icon. And yes, of course you need 3 permanent runes or 3 ores ;)

no not yet.... I don't think it's a worrying symptom

Guys can you help me? I am not sure if this is the right topic, but it is about swords so...On czech forum we have this boy who told us that he found Dol Blathanna Rune Sword somewhere in the 1st chapter of the game. He is a bit lier ;D and he doesn't have a screenshot of it, we do not belive him of course, but he has no proof, screenshot or game save...Some websites says that this sword can only be found in American version of the game... Can somebody pleeease post me a screenshot of it, so we can prove him wrong? Or some written news about where this sword can/cannot be found... Thanks a lot!

does he say where in the first chapter ? the asset is in the game so it's possible, but i've never found one (at least not that i recall )

Such a sword in Act 1 :hmmm: Maybe it's a relict from content which didn't make it in the game but wasn't removed entirely (like Ida and Marcus Vertz ;D ) But I don't think it's available in Act 1.
