[DISCUSSION] Witcher 3 - Reviews

+
10/10 is not a figure I would trust. Because it means perfect, flawless without any fault. Which is, with all love to the Witcher games and books, not reachable number for any game. Ever.
No game is perfect, even the Witcher 3 isn't. I can assure you that there are people who wouldn't enjoy the game at all, which means it isn't a 10/10.

Don't get me wrong. I'm awating this game for more than 2 years now and I'm pretty sure that it will be one of the best gaming experiences I've had so far.

But 10/10 means that all gamers, all over the world would enjoy this game like me. This is kind of hubris and unprofessional.
Moreover I would trust reviewers which give it a 9.5/10, because this is the upmost figure I could imagine a game could get.

10/10 means that the overall experience for the reviewer was so amazing that, problems aside, he feels the game deserves the maximum score. A review score is not an addition of positive and negative points, it is supposed to reflect the overall impression of the reviewer.

I don't believe a '10/10' score means a game is depicted as 'perfect'. It means the game is an essential 'must buy' for any lover of that games perspective genre.

the gamespot review recommended choosing one difficulty higher than you would normally choose.

I'm more curious as to what Metacritic user reviews say.

"Combat is utter shite, Bloodborne was 1000 times better than this crap."
"Boring fetch quests, CDPR are liars."
"Hurr, hurr, downgrade, worse than Watch Dogs, I called it."
"I hate Jerald, why can't I create my own f*cking character?"
"This game sucks, lol."

Yeah, I'm really curious, too...

Seriously though, it's safe to say it will land at around 8.0 unless it has some serious performance issues, then it's a 5.6.

That fucking Metro review.

It was fine until the whole misogyny thing. They criticise the portrayal of women in the first two games, which I disagree with but can just about understand. But then they don't mind all the tits and ass, and brothels (which by all accounts is back in force) when there's a female playable character. That's some impressive mental gymnastics right there.

I see where your coming from. For me I find other gamers more honest than review sites, yeah there will be a spat of I didn't get what I want so it's a zero types but at least they are honest. Looking past that, I'm more looking for User reviews coming in with a analytical view point, one that have sound mind.

Nice seeing them receiving high reviews :) Let's just hope it's not another case of misleading journalists. I doubt it, but you can never be too sure. Number crunching can be fun - I think TW3 will settle around 90-91. I didn't read them all, but the impression I have is that most of the subtraction was due to technical issues. There's a small tinge of regret in losing points due to that, and makes you wonder how different would it have been with some more weeks of polish. It's like losing points in an essay due to citation mistakes. And I really hope that these extra weeks really helped CDPR fix whatever it is they had with XB1 and PC. There was that reassuring post a day ago about them achieving greater performance in the past two weeks. Let's hope it's sincere.

I sometimes get the feeling that CDPR and TW3 are inspected with a magnifying glass not reserved for other games. Then again, I can't say I read every review of every other game, nor followed the forums of other titles, so I'm half talking out of my ass. It's also just as common to say that us fanboys defend CDPR no matter what, so what can you do.

Anyway, I can overcome technical matters. They don't really bug me (no pun intended), unless they're something major, which doesn't seem to be the case. The main thing that caught my eye were remarks about the story and fetch quests. Mainly from IGN, but some other quotes here and there. It makes me a bit uneasy. Then again, IGN also described that it comes down to Geralt doing errands for people in order to get more information about Ciri. That makes it sound dull, but if you really want to, you can strip anything to its skeleton and make it sound uninspiring. The Last of Us is about escorting a girl. TW1 is asking people about criminals. A similar argument can be made about side quests, that almost all of them come down to fetching something. That doesn't bother me - what matters is how these quests are dressed and written. So IGN's review put me a bit on edge, because the story is the most important thing here, but I'm also taking them with a grain of salt.

There's also that distinction between book readers and non book readers. I'll be surprised if the story will bore anyone who read the saga. It's a stand-alone title and all, yeah, but everything has more weight to it once you're so acquainted with the whos and whats. So as far as my own self interest goes, I'm probably covered.

All the other reviews are filled with your usual contradictions and subjective perspectives. The open world is great. The open world sucks. The combat is fun. The combat is in the way. It's mostly what the journalists specify that matter, instead of their headlines and bullet points (which is partly why I'm still optimistic despite IGN's cold impression with the story - I didn't find them elaborating too much).

Wow, these scores! Looks like I aimed low with my 91 metascore guess. And most of the negatives are related to the performance. Well deserved, CDPR!

Although I think the expectations just got even higher, so the user score might end up even lower than I thought it will.
But who the hell cares?
I think it will stabilize around your guess. I'll be surprised if it reaches beyond 93 at this point.

Never found them helpful to me. Not their average, anyway. I also think that CDPR has antagonized some hardcore (and kinda awkward, I feel) PC enthusiasts group that will bomb them. And then there are those who I think believe CDPR to be self-righteous and tooting its own horn too much, and they might sink the score too, out of some vindictive drive. And maybe the game just sucks, simply.

I admit though I've never read the more reasonable metacritic user reviews. I do occasionally read the Steam ones - they tend to inform me what I need to know.

Anyway, I'm excited. And glad for CDPR.

Could have been worse, though... most other reviewers usually ringing that same bell stayed pretty objective on Wild Hunt.

As for bugs and glitches we have yet to witness an open world game that's deprived of them...or to be honest any game for that matter.

All video reviews are quite spoilery..I'd avoid them. I had to close the gametrailer one or look away to not catch glimpses of some areas and cutscenes.

Especially the cutscenes/NPC's that are shown are spoilers in itself, even without context.

One thing I have to say, though: The choice between Triss and Yen judging from looks alone, will be really hard...

I've read the books..Yenn all the way (at least for my first complete playthrough ^^).
