An open Letter to my favorite Game devs.
Dear CD Projekt RED,
Hey how ya doin’? Pretty good by the looks of it, six million copies sold within the first six weeks with a total net profit this year of 62 million dollars. It’s quite clear you have mastered your craft. Generally when this happens a studio realizes the power they have at their fingertips and immediately punish their fans with a vigor that most politicians would be proud of. Season passes, 5 dollar cosmetic changes, crappy unfinished buggy games and confusing horrible pre-order deals.
This was a reality I had learned to accept. I begin to be ok with those 5 dollar cosmetic changes I was ok with unfinished games, I was ok with pre-order deals. To be honest I became desensitized to a lot of the dishonest behavior that filled the gaming industry. Whenever that childish version of me spoke out against these practices I silenced him saying. “Oh you silly child, gaming is a business and order for them to be successful that’s what they have to do. They have their bottom line to worry about. Thousands of people rely on them making a successful game. If any Indie dev made it big they would behave the same way.” For years that’s what I believed. I eventually gave in and sipped the Kool Aid, I even got to the point of forcing others to drink it too. Having heated debates on message boards calling those simple minded dreamers that games aren’t about making you happy, they exist to make money and money only.
But you, you’re different. I’m not going to pretend I was a longtime fan of the series the truth is I made fun of your games, calling them immature. I mean seriously romance cards!? Come on!!! But that all changed a month ago. I just turned 20 and with all the stupid Facebook notifications clogging up my phone one of my friends called me over skype to say Happy Birthday. We chatted for a bit making fun of the front page of Steam, discussing Hearthstone tactics ya know normal gaming stuff. Suddenly my friend changed the topic and asked me what I wanted for my birthday. I told him to take a look at my Wish list on Steam. Assuming he was gonna pick me up a good ol’ indie game I named off some of the cheaper things on my wish list. He laughed and said “How bout the Witcher 3?” Taken aback by his generosity immediately responded with a resounding YES! Little did I know my view of the gaming world was about to take an immediate U-Turn.
I had stuff to do that day but just to make sure my computer could handle it I launched it as a test. After that was successful I decided to watch the first cut scene thinking what could be the harm in that? The experience was surreal. What started as a test launch turned into a full day of non-stop playing. For the first time in years instead of playing my favorite podcast I turned up the volume on my headphones and was sucked into the beautiful world created just for me to experience.
The Witcher became a part of my daily routine work, eat, play the Witcher, sleep. After playing the game for what Steam told me was 20 hours, I decided to look at the DLC offered by the Witcher. My heart immediately dropped. All this cosmetic DLC I guess some things never change. In morbid curiosity I looked at the price…………… At first I thought Steam was glitching out on me, could it be….. There’s no way….. Free DLC!? Not just free cosmetics free weapons, free armours, free quest lines, free emotes. A Triple A title has free cosmetics!? FREE!?!?!?!?!
Not only had Projekt RED created a game that put Skyrim to shame, they created a game that was pro-gamer. Projekt RED is the one studio that actually cares about their fans they listen they change they reward old fans and reward new ones. A developer that encourages mods, is anti DRM, and promotes an environment that is pro-gamer. Projekt RED my friend didn’t just give me a game. He gave me hope. He reminded me that video games aren’t just a product to be sold it truly is art, it affects us it changes us it helps us think. I often stay up thinking about the world Geralt lives in. A complicated dark world. A world where just because you did the right thing doesn’t mean it actually helped the people around you. I could go on and on about the world that the Witcher takes place in maybe another time but until then. Thank you Projekt RED thank you for reminding me how amazing games are and how amazing the people behind the computers are.
