How do you "check and do a clean install of the latest drivers"?
First you will need two things (1) driver sweeper a small program found here (2) the latest drivers for your video card download and install Driver Sweepergo to control panel and select programs and features then scroll down the list and select the entries for your video card and uninstall then restart computer and when computer starts to reboot tap the F8 button continuously until your given the menu for several options one of which will be safe mode . Select safe mode and press enter and wait until computer boots in safe mode then locate and open driver sweeper and select the box or boxes pertaining to your video card then click analyze and then clean when complete it should ask if you want to reboot click yes when computer reboots you will be back in normal mode locate your downloaded video drivers and install them and reboot a final time. Congratulations you have just performed a clean install of video drivers !!

I'm using windows 7 ultimate x86, GTS250 and the witcher EE patch 1.5. I found out the reason is this "Display Driver NVIDIA Windows Kernal Mode Driver, Version 258.96 stopped responding and has successfully recovered." It only happen when I play the witcher, every other games is find.I did everything written in the FAQ and some advices about NVIDIA driver I found on the net but nothing work. The game still crashing randomly. It work perfectly when I used windows XP SP3. I was in chapter IV with patch 1.4 when I played it on windows XP SP3, I wish I has finished it back then.
I don`t know how long it`s been since you have given your computer a general cleaning but i would check that first especially around the GPU fan and heat sink. I had the exact issue your describing and it turned out that there was a piece of lint in the PCI-e slot could also be a failing PSU . Do you know the specs of your PSU and how old it is

I just cleaned my PC today. I didn't see that message anymore, at least for now. But the game still crash about 15' after starting sometime it's sooner and randomly. This time I really have no clue what cause the crash. My PSU is a Cooler Master extreme power plus 500w, just bought it about a year ago. Running a Core 2 Duo 2,4Ghz, DDR2 3Gb.Anyway, thanks for the reply :)

Have you tried disabling autosave as it can sometimes cause random crashing

I've read about auto save issues but I didn't think it's the problem. So now you mentioned it, I tried and the game still crashed. Like I said before, I played the game to chapter IV but on windows XP SP3 with the old VGA GeForce 7600GTS. My friend is keeping it, when I get it back, I'll try it on windows 7. I'll even consider to install windows XP sp3 on another HDD if the game still crashed. No matter what the result is, I'll not bother you anymore. Thank you very much.I'm looking toward The Witcher 2, and hopefully there'll be no more crashing or any stupid issues. I believe it'll be a great game.

The Witcher really is a great game and i really don`t mind helping someone who is having troubles running their game one thing you could do is read: http://witcher.wikia.com/wiki/Getting_tech_help_on_the_forum and attach that PCWizard report as instructeddo attach the file ERRLOG.TXT from The Witcher/System folder ( if the game crashed )I also run a GTS 250 and at one time was having the crashes as well but not anymore. On your video drivers were they an overwrite or a clean install ?

Well, If you say so :) Below is the newest errlog file with new game, no auto save or any attempt to do a manual save. I have noticed this "Display Driver NVIDIA Windows Kernal Mode Driver, Version 258.96 stopped responding and has successfully recovered." show up again when I played at windows mode.About the NVIDIA driver, I tried to enable "Turn Off Windows Update Device Driver Search Prompt" in group policy, selected "Never install driver software..." in Devices and Printers and turn off windows auto-update but it still install the driver version (microsoft corporation - WDDM v1.1). It didn't have NVIDIA Contral Panel or show up in Uninstall a Program. Then I installed version 258.96. So I guess that's overwrite ?

You can try reseating your video card it may not be all the way down in the PCI-e slot do you happen to know what your card clocks are ?

this error might point out to another thing: hardware issue

Well, I really hope it's the hardware issue, because if it's, I can just simply save some money and buy a new one, then the problem solved and we all happy :DBut the message only appeared when I play the witcher and I don't know what's caused the crash. The other games is fine. I think this is my vga clocks :Clock Speed 740 MHzRAMDAC Clock Speed 400 MHzMemory Clock Speed 2.2 GHz, 2.008 GHzFor now let's just see it as a compatible issues of my hardware.

download and install either MSI afterburner or EVGA precision and either one will tell you exactly what your clock speeds are and both are capable of showing any number of things in game such as card temps, fps, fan speedonce installed and showing in notification area right click and select showThe core and shader clock should both move at the same time if not then click the link between the twonow move the core clock to 715 or as close as you can get and the memory clock to around 975click apply and retry the game

My VGA is ASUS brand. I just install Asus smartdoctor and here is the default clock:Engine(core) : 740 MHzShader: 1836 MHzMemory: 2200 MHzBut MSI afterburner said Memory is 1100Mhz. The diagram of MSI show that both core and shader are moved at the same time. When searching on asus site I download the new VGA BIOS, it fix some issues about fan and cooling problem , but when I update it said the Board ID is not match so I didn't dare to continue.

Mine is as well . I tried the smart doctor for awhile but didn`t really like it that well which is why i use afterburner. Smart move as if you try to flash your card with the wrong BIOS you will have a useless card. Also with the afterburner program you can set your fan speed according to your card temps. as i said before move the core clock down to about 715 and the shader clock shoud move as well then move the memory clock to about 975 and click apply and retry the game. If you want to monitor anything in game click the settings tab and then the monitoring tab and select the ones you want to monitor . I suggest only 3 -fps and card temp and fan speed

I enabled HyperDrive in smartdoctor and select 3d game mode. It decreased the shader to about 1480 or so but still kept the core clock at 740. Plus, I used smartcooling in fan control tab. There's no more random crash so far, just once when I tried to save manually in the outskirts. I guess it's just the temperature problem after all.I don't understand what those clocks is used for, but I guess if I do what you said it'll slow down the card and so decrease the temperature as well right? I still didn't try it, but I think I'll later.Thank you, again. I didn't know about MSI afterburner or think about using smartdoctor if you didn't point it out.

I can`t really remember now as it`s been about a year and a half since i had all that installed. But i do remember smart doctor and gamer OSD but didn`t give it much thought as it`s something i didn`t like or use. Also if your using the ASUS software you might try using their video drivers but be warned that their version will always be about 3 months or more behind the version that nvidia releases. I don`t know why that is and if you will check the download size you will find that the version ASUS releases will always be larger in size than the version Nvidia releases i think this is because to make it compatible with smart doctor and possibly with gamer osd

I took the time to read through all these replies and realized, about 173 hours into the patch 1.5 download, (I'm rockin an astounding 112bps-2.48kbps down with frequent server resets at work) if I actually wanted to play the game this millenia I was going to have to find a workaround for my problems without "Updating, removing tages, and checking my driver versions"OS: Windows 7 Home Premium x64IS: COMODO Internet Security Premium (No problems here... just disable Sandbox and Defense+ like you do for all your other safe installations)DX11, VC and VGA drivers all updated the last time I was home long enough to kick my feet up. (February of this year). A good rule of thumb is to check for updates to all your drivers and redistributables monthly (when you can) instead of waiting for it to become an emergency.Clean install from an Enhanced Edition DVD.Hardware is going to be somewhat irrelavent as I didn't run into trouble that seemed hardware related and, in reality, you could spend a week getting one person through their particular hardware crisis without helping another soul. That... and as a rule, I don't give out hardware advice to people that may not understand and kill their system. Also, I'll -try- to dumb it down to near helpful for the COMPLETELY computer illiterate (we know you're out there... at least you try)The biggest problem I ran into with the Win7 install was the admin mess that I saw mentioned a couple of times in light detail. Do NOT run the game prior to giving it admin privaleges. Every time I opened the game, even with, privaleges it would tell me it needed them on my first install. Right click > Run as Administrator is also a joke it seems (install #2, first run). Just uninstall the game and retry, or see if the 1.5 patch helps. After a clean install (install #3 for me... hooray) close the launcher all together. Head over to the system sub-directory of your install folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\The Witcher Enhanced Edition\System" by default (minus the (x86) after "Program Files" if your running a 32 bit OS. Your looking for the "witcher.exe" file. Right click on the file, and click on "Properties" in the drop list. In the "Compatibilty" tab, click the box next to "Run this program as an Administrator" and click "OK" at the bottom of the window. Go ahead and leave the folder open, because if you want to open the game from the launcher later you'll have to undo what you just did after the game runs for the first time (the EXACT same steps you just used undoes the change). EDIT: Run "witcher.exe" to start the game. I'm sure you knew that already. =)If it complains about the "Original DVD" the first thing to check is that you don't still have the "BONUS Disc" in your drive. It should go without saying, but I got excited and forgot about it.It would go anywhere from 30 minutes to 5 hours and then go black coming out of a loading screen requiring a hard reboot. Just run it windowed as mentioned by a previous poster and that should clear up. If your playing OTS there really isn't even much of a drawback (you can cry later about having to run 19:12 windowed instead of 25:16 FS... your not exactly suffering).I will say that I finally finished the 1.5 and DC patch downloads and got the annoying Tages removed and I'm thoroughly enjoying the game.

OK, without going through the past two years of comments, here is my issue:I am trying to install W Enhanced. I wait like 20 min while it installs. After the bonus disc installs it just quits! No questions, no nothing. And I can't find it on my hard drive. i can start it by dropping the CD, but it tells me I don't have admin priv. I have also tried to dl 1.5 patch, but if I can't even find the game on my comp??WTFO????

read the FAQ: http://www.thewitcher.com/forum/index.php?topic=17503.0 update to patch 1.5 first, remove TAGES as explained, then retry
